Public utilities Troisdorf have been supplying the region around Troisdorf with electricity, natural gas and drinking water for over 100 years. The pioneering company is a good example of how tradition and progress do not have to be mutually exclusive. Subjects such as green electricity, electric mobility and smart homes are old hat here.

Description

As part of the introduction of an information security management Public utilities Troisdorf have therefore set themselves the challenge of modernising their system infrastructure including switchgear cabinets, telecontrol and network technology.
To this end, public utilities Troisdorf have formulated a concept together with SAE IT-systems: The communication infrastructure of the telecontrol was divided into three areas: Local network stations, renewable energy and transformer station with gas transfer station. In the substations of the three areas, telecontrol stations of type net-line FW-5, net-line FW-5-GATE-4G and net-line FW-50 communicate via LTE or DSL with the VPN router of the relevant area. This transmits the data via the three telecontrol heads of type net-line FW-50 per area to the control centre. A corresponding load sharing is possible at the substations thanks to this special connection. The network technology was housed in a switchgear cabinet separately from the telecontrol system. The spatial division ensures improved security. The information from the short circuit and earth fault indicators in the local network stations, from the power quality monitoring units as well as from the gas transfer station is read out from the telecontrol via Modbus RTU, IEC 60870-5-103 and IEC 60870-5-104. This data too can be transmitted to the Troisdorf control centre and analysed remotely by the staff thanks to telecontrol.

Public utilities Troisdorf utilised the expertise in system integration provided by SAE IT-systems for the installation and wiring of the components in the switchgear cabinet. The technical personnel in the Cologne company also provided support for the configuration and commissioning. To further increase the security and stability level, the Troisdorf staff will work with a Syslog server in future. This enables the network infrastructure to be monitored with regard to stability changes, access events and access attempts.
